For those of you looking for a peaceful retreat in Menorca to escape from everything, a unique space far from the madding crowd but where you can take in what is authentic, we recommend the agro tourism of Matxani Gran on the outskirts of San Clemente. A typical Menorcan country house built in the early 18th-century during the first period of British domination of the island, it was turned into one of the first agro tourism centres in Menorca almost thirty years ago.
It was in 1987 when a British couple –Shaun and Jenny- bought the property to turn it into a benchmark for rest and holidays. Six years ago, Llorenç and Yolanda took over the reins to bring Matxani closer to their dream, a dream made up of secret ingredients such as love for what is traditional, dedication and a passion for doing things well.
Of the ten rooms in Matxani Gran, nine are distributed on the ground floor, where the farm workers once lived, and the other is in the old coach house, at the entrance to the woods. The rooms balance respect for traditional rural construction material such as mares stone walls and wooden beams with the comforts of the 21st century; rooms dressed in colours that recall the nature of Menorca, all of them minimalist and cosy yet distinct, as are their guests.
The estate covers some ten hectares, more than enough space to keep a flock of sheep, of tiny lambs and some friendly donkeys called Jordi and Consuelo who love to see visitors, especially if accompanied by a piece of bread left over from breakfast or a carrot from the allotment.
