Menorca hosts the ‘X Volta Menorca MTB’ between the 9th and 12th of October and the XV Vuelta Menorca 2015 between the 16th and 18th of October, two well-established events that enables participants to enjoy their passion for two wheels while taking in the most breathtakingly beautiful spots of Menorca’s countryside.
Both events are an incentive for whom wishes to discover this paradise called Menorca by pedalling, something that obviously involves a bicycle, but the type of bicycle differs, since the first event is held amoung the rougher tracks and the second one uses the general road network.
“Firstly, with a bike costing between 400-500 euros it would be okay to participate, although with Menorca’s tough terrain, you will appreciate double suspension, this would involve a higher cost of between 1,500 and 2,000 euros”, explains Vicenç, of Motos Sant Lluís, a company that is dedicated to the the two wheel transport.
Fonso, of Ciclos Tramontana, agrees with both appraisals and adds that Menorca is more suited to MTB. “In Mallorca, with a more extensive road network, road cycling is more popular, but in Menorca, in contrast, it is MBT that is more popular because we have the briddle path, Camí de Cavalls, and many secondary tracks”, he explains.
At the time of buying the ‘iron horse’ that will enable you to attend events such as the “Vuelta a Menorca”, the professionals recommend going to a specialised shop. “We can advise you of the best choice according to age and weight of the cyclist, even depending on the use for which the bike is being bought, because needs differ for those who want to buy a sports bike or a touring bike”, adds Vicenç.
As well as the bicycle, you would need other accessories, for example; the use of a helmet is mandatory and gloves are an important accessory and it is also advisable to take a repair kit, and many cyclists also opt for a speedometer. You can add lots of other extras but they are not so necessary”, points out Fonso.
