An excursion to the Natural Park of s’Albufera des Grau in Menorca

The Natural Park of S’Albufera des Grau is a protected area located in Es Grau, near Mahón. This protected area includes the coastal lake of the Albufera des Grau, one of the most important ecosystems on the island, and known for its great variety of fauna and flora. If you love birdwatching, don’t forget to bring your binoculars to observe them in their natural habitat!  You may be lucky and discover some of the more than 25 species of birds that can be seen here.

S’Albufera des Grau was declared a Natural Park in 1995 in order to protect this valuable ecosystem and its biodiversity, and promote environmental education and interpretation of the natural environment. In 2003 the Natural Park’s boundaries were extended and 5 nature reserves were declared: Islas de Addaia, S’estany, Bassa de Morella, Es Prat and La Illa d’en Colom.

The park has several paths and three well-marked routes, ideal for the entire family to explore. There is also an exhibition and educational programmes for visitors of all ages.

In addition, you can practice some of the most popular outdoor activities, such as hiking and cycling, however without leaving the marked paths, respecting the park’s  indications and regulations, so as not to damage the ecosystem.

How to get there

First take the main road until you reach Mahón and then turn off towards the Es Grau road until km 3.5 where you will see S’Albufera des Grau signposted.

After the turn-off, you must continue for another kilometre by car until you reach the signposted car park, right next to the information centre, where you will find all details of the paths and an exhibition, ideal for visiting with children. From there, you can choose which route to take and start exploring S’Albufera des Grau.
