A new episode of Talks That Inspire, featuring Nieves Portas, General Manager of the Teatro Principal de Mahón

In this fourth episode of Talks That Inspire, we visit one of Mahón’s most iconic venues: the Teatro Principal de Mahón. With a nearly 200 years of history, this theatre — inaugurated on 15th December 1829 — holds the distinction of being Spain’s oldest opera house. Notably, it was also the first building in Mahón to be equipped with electricity, marking a significant turning point in the city’s history.

On this occasion, we sit down with Nieves Portas, General Manager and Director of the theatre, to explore her daily work and the challenges of leading such an important cultural institution.

Nieves Portas: A Lifelong Commitment to the Performing Arts

Originally from Ibiza, Nieves Portas has forged an international career in the performing arts. With over 20 years of experience as a dancer, choreographer, director, educator, and cultural manager, she has worked in major cities including Madrid and New York, and is a member of the Spanish Academy of Performing Arts. In 2023, she assumed the role of General Manager at the Teatro Principal de Mahón, contributing her vision and expertise to enrich Menorca’s cultural landscape.

As Nieves puts it, “Theatres should be like a house of freedom.” Her role is far from simple she receives over 50 requests daily from actors and artists seeking to perform at the theatre.  As Director, she is responsible for deciding which shows and projects will be included in the programme. She also emphasises the richness of Menorca’s artistic community, which includes acclaimed talents such as Joan Pons, Marco Mezquida, Simón Orfila, Àlvar Triay, Joana Pons i ses Guitarres, Queralt Albinyana, Rodo Gener, and Laura Pons, among others.
