It is still a destination outside of the usual circuits for surfing and windsurfing, despite the fact that Menorca is considered a paradise for sailors where the wind is usually a regular guest for most of the year: a treasure to discover where you can visit all its spots to make the most of the best waves.
For beginners, the bay of Fornells is a must visit because its waters are sheltered by a closed mouth that protects it from the strong wind and waves. The bay has its own islets, beaches and unspoilt coves that add charm to the direct contact with nature. The bay also has an ecosystem of sedentary birds, (birds that do not migrate to Africa in the winter). In the bay itself it is easy to find companies that give courses or hire out boards. The Club Náutic de Fornells is an example of those that give courses in the off season and which has organised competitions for many years.
For the bolder and more experienced surfers, Menorca has an infinite number of spots east to west and north to south. In the south are Punta Prima, Son Bou, Binigaus and Cala’n Bosc. For the courageous in the north, Cala Tortuga, Calders, Cala Tirant, Cavalleria, El Pico, Cala Pilar, Cala’n Carbó and La Vallare, these places are the ones to note down in your diaries.
The Mediterranean does not possess a constant tide but Menorca has certain moments in the year when the waters are rough and with waves perfect for surfing. Surfing has taken on a more important role in such a way as for the last three years a gathering event has been held every April on the beach of Punta Prima that has become an obligatory event.
