Visit to La Mola, Fortress of Isabel II

The Mola, Fortress of Isabel II, is a historic fortress with an impressive architecture located in Menorca, near the town of Mahon.

 

Built in the 19th century, during the reign of Isabel II of Spain after whom it was named, to protect the harbour of Mahón, the most important naval port in Menorca, from possible enemy attacks. The fortress was designed by the military engineer José de la Peña, and was built using the “living factory” technique, a technique that consisted of building the fortress on a natural hill, using the local rock to reinforce the walls. A well-preserved military architecture of that period that you should visit when you are on the island.

 

 

The fortress was built in several stages, and has a number of buildings, including a military parade ground, a church, a hospital, a prison, a battery, and several gunpowder stores. During the Spanish Civil War, the fortress was used as a prison and concentration camp.

 

Currently, the fortress is an important tourist site, which is open to the public offering panoramic views of the city and the bay, as well as the possibility of guided tours of its museums and exhibitions. In addition, the fortress is also used as a venue for cultural events and concerts.
